Did you know?

In a lifetime, the average American will throw away 600 times his/her adult weight in garbage. This means that a 150-lb. adult will leave a legacy of 90,000 lbs of trash for his/her children.

More than 56 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. during 2007 was recovered for recycling — an all-time high. This impressive figure equals nearly 360 pounds of paper for each man, woman, and child in America including Springfield MA.

Americans go through 2.5 million plastic bottles every year. If every American household recycled just one out of every ten HDPE bottles they used, we’d keep 200 million pounds of the plastic out of landfills every year.

If you had a 15-year-old tree and made it into paper grocery bags, you’d get about 700 of them. A supermarket could use all of them in under an hour. This means in one year, one supermarket goes through 60,500,000 paper bags.

8 TRASH DISPOSAL TIPS TO REMEMBER

BY LINDA FOWLES

Renting a dumpster can come in handy in a variety of situations – spring cleanout, home renovation, roofing projects, yard waste removal and more.  Here are some tips to put a roll-off dumpster to work for you:

#1 Be Prepared

There are many factors that will affect the price of your trash or recycling container, so it is important to be as prepared possible. It’s best to call a week before you need the container delivered to you in order to secure your preferred delivery slot.

Questions Waste Focus will ask you in order to set up delivery:

  • What will you be putting in the waste container?
  • Do you know what size you need?  (If you don’t, no worries, we will be more than happy to help you figure that out!)
  • What is the address you would like the container delivered? What are your placement instructions?
  • How long do you need the container for?
  • When would you like delivery?

#2 Choose the right size container

Roll-off dumpsters come in a variety of sizes measured in cubic yards, which indicate the capacity of the container. It may be enticing to cut costs by going with the smallest container size, but that often leads to trouble as most agreements include a weight allowance which will affect your price if you go over that allowance. When in doubt, a larger container is the safest option.

  • 15-20 yard containers are best for small to medium cleanups and projects
  • 30-40 yard containers are best suited for things such as demolition debris, new home construction and office building cleanout.

#3 Consider sharing the container with a friend

Let any friends, family, or neighbors know that you’re planning on renting a container, and see if they would like to share the dumpster and the cost. For example, if you’re completing a large kitchen renovation and your neighbor has a few items they wish to clean out of their basement, they could pay a small portion of your rental.  Or, if they’ve got a bit more they need to dispose of, you could split it down the middle.

#4 Schedule Delivery

Once you’ve decided on the best container for your trash removal in Springfield MA (or any area we service), it is time to schedule delivery. Our friendly customer service representatives will secure the best delivery date and time that suits your needs.

#5 Load your dumpster

Items that you CAN put into your dumpster include:

  • Household “junk”
  • Clothing
  • Paper
  • Trash
  • Furniture

What CAN’T I put in my dumpster?

  • Batteries
  • Wet paint
  • Anything with Freon (refrigerators, air conditioners)
  • Asbestos
  • Tires
  • Televisions
  • Computer monitors

Items that you can put into your dumpster if they are a “clean load” (meaning that they will be the only items in the container):

  • Roof shingles
  • Wood
  • Concrete (dry only)

#6 Schedule removal of your dumpster

Once you’ve completed your project and are ready for your dumpster to be removed, call Waste Focus and we will schedule the removal at a time convenient for you. And remember to make sure that the container isn’t blocked by any vehicles or items that would prevent the container from being removed during your scheduled day.  Otherwise, you may have to pay what’s referred to as a “trip charge” to cover the drivers’ fuel and time.
